HOW DO I DO A PERFORMANCE BUN?

You will need:

  • Water (in a spray bottle)
  • A towel
  • Gel (extra hold)
  • Hair spray
  • Hair tie(s) (the thick ones hold best)
  • Hair pins (the thick ones)
  • Bobby pins
  • Hair clips (only for very short hair)
  • A hair net
  • A plastic brush with wide spaces between the teeth
  • A plastic brush with thin spaces between the teeth
  1. Start with towel dry, clean hair.
  2. Brush out ALL the tangles with the wide spaced brush
  3. Apply a lot of gel throughout the hair and brush it in with the wide brush.
  4. Continue to brush with the thinly spaced brush.
  5. Put hair in a tight, high ponytail at the upper part of the head. (As you do this, continue to smooth the hair with your hands so there are no "bumps" in the hair. The hair should be tight and flat against the head with all brush marks running straight back.) Use one to three hair ties (depending on the thickness of the hair) to secure the ponytail. Secure the ponytail TIGHT!
  6. Braid the ponytail then wrap it tightly around the hair tie.
  7. Secure it with many hairpins (not bobby pins). Be sure to pin the hairpins under the hair tie. This will ensure that the bun stays in place.
  8. Wrap a hair net over the bun until secure and use more hairpins to keep it in place.
  9. Spray wisps of hair with hairspray and smooth them down with your hand.
  10. Apply gel to any hair under the bun behind the head that does not stay in the bun and bobby pin it in place. If the hair is too short to get it to stay with just bobby pins, use hair clips (the color of the child's hair) to secure these pieces.
  11. Apply hairspray to the entire head and allow the hair to dry. The hair should feel HARD when completely dry.
  12. MOST OF ALL PRACTICE BEFORE THE DAY OF THE REHEARSAL AND SHOW SO YOU CAN GET IT RIGHT!!! A BUN DONE PROPERLY WILL LAST FOR BOTH SHOWS WITH ONLY A FEW SPRITZES OF HAIRSPRAY BETWEEN SHOWS!
